Voter’s Guide
for the May 15, 2007 Primary Election

This Primary Election you will be voting only for those candidates who are filed to run in the Democrat or Republican Primary. You may only vote for candidates in races within the party you are registered – either Democrat or Republican. You will be voting for statewide Judgeships; Common Pleas Court Judge; County Commissioner, county row offices; District Justices; and School Board Directors in all 13 school districts in Bucks County. For the Primary, this Guide will only provide information about School Board candidates. Again, because this is a Primary Election, only Democrat and Republican candidates are listed and you can only vote for candidates who are of the party in which you are registered to vote.

If you want to print out this Guide, you may take it in to the voting booth with you when you vote.

SCHOOL BOARDS
Although there is tremendous public support for comprehensive sexuality education in our schools, opponents of sexuality education have filed to run for school board seats all over the country. They are opposed to programs that include responsible, age-appropriate, medically accurate, comprehensive sexuality education in the schools – instead favoring “abstinence only” programs, denying students information about contraception. Studies, including one done in PA and a national study JUST released, show that abstinence-only programs are largely ineffective and that balanced programs promoting both abstinence and safer sex are most effective. Planned Parenthood believes teens need honest information to make responsible choices. We sent each candidate a questionnaire and have summarized the responses below.

Nothing after their name means they did not respond and we do not know their views. We encourage you to contact a candidate from your area and ask their views on sexuality education in our schools if they did not complete on questionnaire. Call us if you find out further information – thank you!

Almost all candidates have cross-filed, meaning their name will appear on the Republican and the Democrat ballot in most cases. Therefore, names appear in alphabetical order – they will be different on the voting machine.

Candidate Questionnaire:

1A. Do you support balanced family life and health curricula that include abstinence, as well as age-appropriate information about contraception to prevent unintended pregnancy and sexually-transmitted infections? (A parent would have the option of taking his/her child out of class if desired).

1B. Do you support a teacher's right to bring in speakers from Planned Parenthood for reproductive health education?

2. Do you support the provision of professional development and training for staff on adolescent health issues, including family life and comprehensive sexuality education?

3. Do you support a school nurse or counselor being able to provide information or referral about pregnancy and/or contraceptive services when asked by a student?

4. Do you support the inclusion of age-appropriate sexuality education materials in the school library?
